Michael (Mike) Ahanonu Egere LLB (London), Solicitor and Advocate of the Supreme Court of Nigeria

Created by Obioha 15 years ago
Born 13th January 1931, Mike was the seventh child of Frederick Nwaneri Egere of Umunwahu, Mpama Egbu and Esther Ugbala Maduagwu of Umuayalu Egbu. His early education was, quite providentially, mainly in St. Michael's School, Aba. This was followed by a year in Government School, Owerri from where he proceeded to Emmanuel College, Owerri for his secondary education. At the time Emmanuel College was a new institution and was yet to gain approval to present candidates for the University of Cambridge Overseas School Leaving Certificate (popularly known as CANTAB). As a result, Mike spent his final year of secondary education in Kalabari National College, Buguma, from where he passed the Cantab. Determined to pursue higher education, he started to study privately for the required University of London General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced level subjects for university admission. He combined private study with full time employment, initially as a trainee manager with Kingsway Stores Enugu ( a subsidiary of UAC Limited) and later as a civil servant in the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture and surveys, Enugu. After accumulating an excess of subjects at GCE A level, he proceeded to the United Kingdom with financial support from his oldest brother John and first cousin Samuel Uchegbu to study law in the University of London. He obtained the degree of LLB(Lond.) in 1966. He worked for a while with the Greater London Council before returning to Nigeria after the Civil War to attend the Nigerian Law School. He was called to the Nigerian Bar and enrolled in the Supreme Court in 1972. Thereafter he established a private legal practice in Lagos and continued in active practice till his passing after a short period of illness. He never aspired to any political office but was for a while a director of the Imo State Government-owned Lake Insurance Limited. Mike was passionate about relationships. He made friends easily and cultivated, nurtured and sustained many friendships. He was humourous and generous with his time and resources. He was uncompromising in his membership of and support for the Egbu Town Union both in Lagos and at home and was at one time the legal adviser to the general assembly and Eze Egbu. Among other organisations to which he belonged were the Nigerian Bar Association; Surulere Lawyers Forum, Lagos; Otu Oka-Iwu, Lagos; Rotary Club of Aguda. He was a devout Christian and worshipped regularly at Our Saviour's Church, TBS, Lagos. Mike was twice married. His first marriage to late Christiana Akuwueziuka Egere (nee Ngoka) of Ihiagwa ended tragically with her death in a road traffic accident in 1976. He is survived by his second wife Christy Chienye (nee Amaechi of Umuosu Naze), a son, Obioha; three daughters, Ijeoma, Ihuaku and Chioma; two grandchildren, Chimsomaga and Nnennaya.
